Checkurself is a London-wide sexual health platform commissioned by the NHS. Its aims are to encourage online testing, increase engagement in sexual health services - particularly among men - and support cost savings through more joined-up digital healthcare delivery.
Ministry named, branded and created the platform for the programme and, more than 15 years later, we continue to manage it. Given the sensitive nature of the service and the data involved, security and governance have always been central to the project. The platform is managed within our ISO27001-certified environment and undergoes regular vulnerability and security testing.
The programme has delivered significant cost savings by shifting STI testing away from clinical settings and towards digital services. It has also been recognised as a model of best practice by Public Health England and the NHS, while the website itself has been the subject of two Masters Degree dissertations.

Signposting for the symptomatic
For those not eligible for home testing (typically if they are experiencing symptoms), the site offers signposting to in-clinic testing - they just enter their postcode and a list of their nearest clinics offering their desired services are displayed.

Shoot 'em up game
One of the key challenges of the Chlamydia Screening Programme was to engage with young males - a group far less likely to test than young females. This first person shoot 'em up game sees the gamer visiting various insalubrious establishments in London shooting infected rabbits with antibiotics. Along the way, they get bonus points by answering questions on how to prevent and treat STIs.

Printed Collateral
We created a portal where all participating boroughs could order branded materials. Each could select some materials and place an order immediately or they could open the order up for other boroughs to join in on and add to the order - thus increasing the volume and reducing the unit cost. This feature saved the NHS tens of thousands of pounds. The materials covered posters, beer mats, button badges, toilet posters, underwear, condoms and also included the racy T-shirts below for outreach.

"Ministry always really impress us with their technical expertise and wow with their creative concepts. They’ve been the perfect partner."
David Pinson - Sexual Health Commissioner
